Political Campaign - 12 Asks

World Hepatitis Day (WHD) on the 19th May is a truly global affair with political and public campaigns being implemented via the new World Hepatitis Alliance.

As part of a coordinated political campaign, governments across the globe are being asked to put in place '12 Asks' (commitments) for an effective hepatitis programme and to do so by 2012. Some countries will find this easier than others. It is hoped that some governments in the UK may be show cased as 'early adopters' due to positive policies already in place in the UK compared to overseas.

12 Asks (commitments)

Governments across the world are being asked to sign up to achieve 12 specific targets by 2012. The first 6 targets are 'global' and the same for every country. The second 6 targets are country specific to address national issues.

DRAFT Asks currently being considered by all governments:

1. Public recognition of chronic viral hepatitis as an urgent public health issue
2. The appointment of an individual to lead Government strategy nationally
3. The development of a patient pathway for screening, diagnosis, referral and treatment
4. Clear, quantifiable targets for reducing incidence and prevalence
5. Clear, quantifiable targets for reducing mortality
6. Clear, quantifiable targets for screening

DRAFT Asks currently being considered by UK governments only:

7. Effective surveillance and publication of national incidence and prevalence statistics
8. Commitment to tackle health inequalities in access to services
9. Commitment to partner with patient groups in national policy design and implementation
10. Provision of free and confidential testing
11. An ongoing national public awareness campaign that alerts people to the issue and is committed to reducing stigma
12. Implementation of an effective national vaccination programme

The above will be updated as they are finalised with government.
They are provided here for indication only.
